<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love Claude Monet. I love teaching students about him and his art work. I came up with the idea to paint a Monet lily pond from an inspiring post from <a href="http://paintedpaperintheartroom.blogspot.com/search?q=hippo">Painted Paper</a>. </div>

These projects were displayed in two different ways for our art show. Some were hung in the hallway with 3rd graders Monet bridges and some were set on tables displayed with third grade clay fish and 3rd grade paper frogs. I have lost 11 pounds though! My other New Years Resolution to lose weight and work out!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There have been many things going on over here. Many projects, preparation for my Art Show, finding out they are not replacing the other elementary art teacher who is retiring...yah know..the goods and the bads! So I have many posts to come. My spring break starts next week and I plan to post away and get caught up!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">One 'good' that is happening is that we are lucky to be getting a new school built! It is a very exciting process. Next year around October/November we should be moving into the new building. I am so excited to have a new art room! No more creepy clowns on the floors and random fire place....yes I said fire place...I will be sure to post before and after shots!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So I decided that my 5th graders this year would draw our old building and I would have our superintendent choose one to be framed and hung at the new building. Loved the idea, I have been planning this since I found out we would be moving in 2012. What I did not plan for was how difficult teaching 2 point perspective would be! I will have to admit...drawing detailed precise lines is not my thing! I am a potter! Even though this has been a major challenge for me and my students I think my 5th graders are working so hard! I am so proud of their dedication! I have a few examples to share. We plan to water color paint these and use colored pencils for details. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have boxes of painted paper in my room. 4th graders spent a class period painting paper to create their valentines day heart paintings. They painted on 12x18 paper, and for their project we only needed a 12x12 cut background. The extra fluorescent painted paper was added to the painted paper boxes for the 5th graders to make their flowers.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1. Students started cutting painted paper in various shapes and sizes to make creative flowers.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2. They were required to have 3 layers for each flower. The third layer could be the middle of the flower, which we used painted paper and medicine bottle caps. (my cousin is a nurse and saved caps for me!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3. They needed to fill their top half of their paper with flowers. I had them add flowers even if there was not a stem for the flower (we pretended the stem was hiding behind another).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">4. Using oil pastels, they added fun line designs to their flowers, and added a highlight to their stems.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

This is my third year teaching, and this was my first printmaking project with students. I LOVED printmaking in college, but felt very rusty and intimidated to try it in the classroom. I am so glad I got over that! The kids loved the project! There was a lot of aaahhhh...oooooh moments! Fabulous when that happens!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

To introduce Ancient Greece to my students I started with a power point and smart board presentation like I normally do. My students are now use to this format. I have cut down the information I provide them though. I get so involved in my research that I think I give information over load to my students sometimes! I wish I could remember which blog I read on, but that particular art teacher stated that she cuts her introduction to history or background information time to 5 minutes. After I read that I changed my format. It was a lot easier on me as well! <br />

A few that I can remember are from an art education friend from college Andrew Kiczek, and Laura at <a href="http://paintedpaperintheartroom.blogspot.com/">Painted Paper</a> (I had the WONDERFUL opportunity to substitute teach for her, and come in and observe her this year! So grateful for her!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1. Using a white 12x18 paper students folded the paper in half (long way!). Drawing on the fold they created an Ancient Greek inspired vase. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2. Cut out and designed Greek Amphora using red, brown, tan, and black crayons. I did have some classes outline with sharpie (once I realized I forgot with the above class!) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3. Backgrounds were painted with black water color paints to create a red figured vase! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">4. I love having my students paint their frames! So we painted our frames using the same colors and made line designs.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3rd and 4th grade projects coming soon! I will be adding more photo's of work to my Flickr account! Another one of my new years resolutions.... ;)</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">For the past few weeks I have already accumulated 6 Art Supply Catalogs! I'm not sure about you, but my supply order is due in March. I feel like it takes me a month to do my supply order! I am getting better each year, but it is one thing I take my time on! I do actually enjoy it! I love going through each catalog comparing prices and supply details. I started creating a list on a magnetic notepad that stays on my metal filing cabinet, of materials I use up through the year. If I come across a cool lesson and see a certain material I want to try I also add it to the list.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">For the past two years I had to constantly fight with pencils! Kids losing pencils...kids sharpening pencils...uuugh it drove me bonkers! Last year I came up with a system where I had a cup filled with sharpened pencils and an empty cup for broken ''need to sharpen'' pencils. Students could turn in their broken one and grab a sharpened one. Well this worked for a little bit. I would forget to sharpen pencils..or students would turn in perfectly good pencils for pin point perfect pencils and that drove me nuts! I then purchased hand held sharpeners that I left on the tables in their buckets. The sharpeners worked perfectly (Faber-Castell Silver sharpener that held the shavings) but then students would be sharpening their pencils every two minutes to have that pin point perfect pencil! AGAIN drove me nuts! PLUS my pencils were gone before the end of the year! So I needed a new plan! The plan I found I LOVE!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXtm2wT0pQBNaW0IWDCLr9W9oJSMCfsLGPJcTcXYXClYfKm1HR1_noZvkOXhHhma_juasrUqOHR35OvmiIbQyn6iY_j-MdF14hm1KD7TAEMDp5rC4o0BytYjmgMqvjTuFSisYbxkQhNAU/s1600/IMG_3061.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXtm2wT0pQBNaW0IWDCLr9W9oJSMCfsLGPJcTcXYXClYfKm1HR1_noZvkOXhHhma_juasrUqOHR35OvmiIbQyn6iY_j-MdF14hm1KD7TAEMDp5rC4o0BytYjmgMqvjTuFSisYbxkQhNAU/s320/IMG_3061.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="center">I came across these Faber-Castell Jumbo Grip pencils!</div><div align="center">Here is why I love them:</div><div align="center">1. They are triangular and they do not roll off the tables! </div><div align="center">2. They have grips!</div><div align="center">3. They are jumbo! They fit well in my little artists hands! :)</div><div align="center">4. They sharpen well!</div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div align="center">The tricks to my pencil fetish...</div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div align="center">At the very beginning of the school year I took about 5 minutes the first day of art to explain the pencils to my students. I S T R E T C H E D the truth a little by telling them that these were VERY expensive ARTIST pencils! I told them that THEY were NOT allowed to sharpen them. It was not needed with these "SPECIAL'' pencils for a sharp point. If they are sharpened too much they will break easily. I said the only reason they will need to be sharpened is if they were BROKEN or if the wood was to close to the point. I have yet to have one break or the lead to come out after it was sharpened. I told them I have a SPECIAL sharpener that I can only use to sharpen them. THEY BOUGHT IT! I have not had a problem with these pencils all year. They have slowly gotten use to the fact they do not need super sharp points, and they do sometimes ask for it to be sharpened. </div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div align="center">Here is how I manage the pencils...</div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div align="center">The bad part about them is that I actually sharpen all of them with a hand held sharpener (the Faber Castell one I mentioned earlier). I do however only sharpen them once maybe twice a week if I know we have a detailed project coming up. I have a cup filled with pre-sharpened pencils so I can easily switch out all the dull pencils in their buckets. This process is working well, now that the students know I will not give them super sharp pencils or sharpen it for them all the time! I also have gotten into habit of making sure they count their pencils and erasers in their buckets at the end of clean-up. They have gotten use to this and do it automatically.</div><div align="center">If you have the same pencil fetish as I do I hope you have found this post helpful! Now if I could figure out the glue bottle fetish I have....hmmmm??? Any Ideas blogger Art Creators ;)</div>Paper Pearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06377020314440259796noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1347290020326599850.post-38087619141632580442012-01-02T18:22:00.000-08:002012-01-02T18:22:39.191-08:00Happy New Year!<div style="text-align: center;">I know I am already a day late....</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I wanted to post my New Years Resolution!</div><div style="text-align: center;">MY BLOG!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I have been very uninspired lately...not motivated...feeling emotionally detached from many things....</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">THE PLAN!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">To become inspired for many things!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">HOW?!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">BLOG!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I am in the works of re-creating my blog...and learning what more my Macbook can do...I have a Tech 'Seminar' in the works with my best friend Leah D'Emilio. Check her out at http://leahdemilio.com/</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I need a major organization plan...</div><div style="text-align: center;">I would like to set aside one evening a week just for my blog and internet research. My families schedule changes weekly, so trying to choose a day is becoming difficult. Maybe set aside two days and choose what day/evening works best for the week? Or maybe it changes every week and Sunday when I write our schedule for the week on my chalk board wall, I look and write down the evening I plan to blog? That way my family knows...it's mom's blogging night! How do you schedule blogging into your hectic schedule?</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">1. First students were given a large square piece of clay. They removed a little piece for the head and added details. Then wedged their large ball of clay.</div><div style="text-align: center;">2. They made their large piece into a pinch pot</div><div style="text-align: center;">3. Using the small piece of clay they removed another chunk for the head and rolled the clay into a ball. They then attached the head to the pinch pot being sure to scratch and score the surface.</div><div style="text-align: center;">4. I had the students poke a hole into the head not to go through completely. It has a medieval theme. I am teaming up with our amazing music teacher and helping her with her props. I decided this year I would also have an art display at the play. All grade levels will be participating in this art display. 5th graders are making medieval dragons using gallery glass. It is a HUGE hit! They think the gallery glass is soo cool...plus of course dragons are always a cool thing too!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Yes my students are still wrapping up our unit on China.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had my 5th grade students create Chinese Lanterns to celebrate the New Year. Simple idea hoping they could make these marvelous. Well I do struggle with 5th grade at times. Some of you might snuff me because I only teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade! How could I struggle with one grade level when I only teach 3!?! I know I ask myself the same question and beat myself up for it in the process...I love 5th graders some days and...well don't enjoy them other days! The beginning of the year they still feel like 4th graders to me so they are still excited about everything we do! Now the year is part way over and they are starting to bring out the attitudes! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can say that this project was not a huge success. I was pretty disappointed with this project overall. Some did marvelous work and exceeded my expectations! So I had to show the ones that worked and how we displayed them for our own Lantern Festival! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6tQNHK2g_lu1ay9BehTeb_onU94NSP-5RFc-E4oyREdbrOGiTfAJ_xTwez6h2ZedP6bUvZAwr0TMjK7AiqYJQwGYD_IxfT84zNZjK5ETMPwrN2Nz8blMg_bF7QBBOcmBOkGxxbG1Zbg/s1600/IMG_2397.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6tQNHK2g_lu1ay9BehTeb_onU94NSP-5RFc-E4oyREdbrOGiTfAJ_xTwez6h2ZedP6bUvZAwr0TMjK7AiqYJQwGYD_IxfT84zNZjK5ETMPwrN2Nz8blMg_bF7QBBOcmBOkGxxbG1Zbg/s320/IMG_2397.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had a lot of Chinese inspired pages of Chinese designs, characters etc. I had my students choose from a yellow or red 12x18 page paper. They had to have a top middle and bottom design. I told them to fill the page 90%. They could outline with marker but could not color in with marker. They had to use colored pencils and work on blending colors. We also added tissue paper on the inside so it looked like a lighted lantern.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcB2fEu5HdM5KeJDAgMj_R8hEbrJIbpe9m_i_cruo8vaU4lXdywkOWVqcYJOE2aHZLzKuC5eeuFDQgWrGtEZS6m9eiHKwd0y3JXciAAwBaiDiqdZsEA3m9LLEprGLOQLS_wLSJg-UFnUU/s1600/IMG_2457.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcB2fEu5HdM5KeJDAgMj_R8hEbrJIbpe9m_i_cruo8vaU4lXdywkOWVqcYJOE2aHZLzKuC5eeuFDQgWrGtEZS6m9eiHKwd0y3JXciAAwBaiDiqdZsEA3m9LLEprGLOQLS_wLSJg-UFnUU/s320/IMG_2457.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
